Racing at the Sunland Park racetrack
The meet fills the gap when most western tracks are dark. In 2026 the Racing Commission granted 55 days, Thursday to Sunday, from January 2 to April 5, with a season purse budget of about $16 million, or more than $275,000 per racing day. Opening day carried the $80,000 Racing Commission Handicap and the $65,000 KLAQ Handicap.
Quarter horses share the oval through the winter. Closing weekend in April 2026 delivered the $389,493 New Mexican Spring Futurity, won by Bridger, and the Grade 2 West Texas Futurity, taken by Lil Kool Panther at long odds. Vodka Vodka won the $250,000 Sunland Park Stakes, the 65th running of that race, on the final afternoon.
The Sunland Derby and Derby Day
The Sunland Derby is the season’s centerpiece, a 1 1/16-mile race for three-year-olds worth $500,000 in 2026 and part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Since 2024 it awards 20-10-6-4-2 qualifying points. Pavlovian won the 2026 edition on February 15 for owner Reddam Racing, trainer Doug O’Neill and jockey Edwin Maldonado.
Derby Day stacks about $1 million in purses onto one card. Bottle of Rouge took the $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks in 2026, and the program also included the Bill Thomas Memorial, Harry W. Henson Handicap, Peppers Pride Stakes and Red Hedeman Mile. Jerry Bailey, Pat Valenzuela and Cash Asmussen all began their riding careers at this track.

Inside Sunland Park Casino
The Sunland Park Casino floor runs more than 700 slot and video poker games, from penny machines to a high-limit room. Because New Mexico limits racetrack gaming to machines, blackjack, roulette and Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em are played on electronic terminals. The casino opens at 10 a.m. daily and stays open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
State law takes 26% of the casino’s net take in gaming taxes for the general fund and sends another 20% to the horsemen’s account, which pays purses. That second share is why a track of this size can run a half-million-dollar derby. A free players club tracks play and drives the monthly drawings and promotions.
Sunland Park Casino restaurant guide
Corralito Steak House is the sit-down restaurant at Sunland Park Casino, with prime cuts, appetizers and seasonal menus; it serves from noon and closes at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The Grill beside the floor is the quick option until midnight on weekends. Riley’s keeps racing fans close to the windows on live race days.
On Derby Day the kitchen adds a margarita party and a special menu. Anyone planning a longer stay will find the hotel cluster along Interstate 10 in west El Paso a short drive away, since the property itself lists dining and entertainment but no guest rooms on its official site.
Concerts and events at Sunland Park
Weekend nights bring live bands to the casino lounge from 8:30 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and mariachi groups play early Sunday evenings. The October 2026 calendar adds a two-day BBQ Weekend on October 15 and 16 and a Rick Springfield concert on October 25, with a Spanish-language comedy run by Richard Villa in November.
Ticketed events are all 21 and over. The venue promotes themed giveaways most months, such as the Cash Blast hot-seat drawings that ran through October 31, 2026. For other venues with regular events, see The Downs Racetrack & Casino in Albuquerque, which mixes dance nights and simulcast every day of the week.
Ownership changes and the road ahead
Sunland Park Casino’s story starts in 1959, when the property opened as a racetrack only; for years it was the region’s sole legal gambling venue. Strategic Gaming Management, led by Grant Lincoln, kept racing director Dustin Dix after the 2025 purchase and named Fred Heinrich president. GLPI counts the property as its fourth with the operator.
Statewide, Sunland Park is one of five licensed racetrack casinos covered on our New Mexico racinos page. Zia Park in Hobbs takes over the calendar each fall, and Ruidoso Downs now holds its meet elsewhere. Our pari-mutuel betting guide explains how wagers pool; set a spending limit before any visit.
